    Why Adopt a Pet?

Pet Adoption-A Responsible Choice Each year, thousands of healthy and highly adoptable pets arrive in animal shelters with one thing in common-they need a new home!
Dogs, Cats, Birds and other animals found by Animal Control Officers or turned in by owners all need a second chance!
Stop by our shelter and see the pets we have and if we don't have the one you're looking for, contact us to let us know the kind of pet you want and we can notify you if it arrives!

It has been estimated that animal overpopulation costs the United States one billion dollars every year and in order to solve the pet population crisis, each man, woman and child would have to have at least seven pets!
The Animal Lovers Assistance League as well as the Currituck County Animal Shelter staff urges you, please don't contribute to the pet overpopulation crisis!
Have your pet spayed/neutered and microchipped.
Just stop by our shelter during normal business hours and we will be happy to help you locate these services at reasonable prices.

While you're there, see the animals that are awaiting adoption because we think that when you're ready, you will want to take one of our pets home with you!

    Are Shelter Pets Healthy?

There is on old misconception that the animals in shelters are old, sick or have problems that make them poor candidates for pets.
    This simply isn't true!

When you look at the facts, it's easy to see that animal shelters have healthy, loving and adoptable pets that would make wonderful companions.

    Pet Adoption Facts

Many of the animals brought to our shelter were turned in by their former owners who could not care for them anymore and are still wonderful pets.

You can adopt a pet from an animal shelter for far less than you can from a breeder or pet store and have hundreds of dollars left over for the pet supplies you will need.

The animals in our shelter have had many of the shots they need, saving you money at the Veterinarian.

Don't be fooled! Purebred animals can have health and behavior problems and some breeders or pet stores might not tell you.

Purebred pet fraud is on the increase! Dishonest breeders play on people's instant attachment to bank their ill-gotten gains!

Pet adoption coupled with spaying or neutering and responsible animal care saves an animal's life!

Included in your adoption fee, is a voucher to help offset the cost of required spay/neuter of your adopted animal

    Adoptable Pets at the Currituck
    County Animal Shelter

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter... the cast-offs of human society.
I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry.
"God", I said, "This is terrible! Why don't you do something?"
God was silent for a moment and then he spoke softly,

"I have done something," he replied, "I created you."
